POLISH AFFAIRS

STATEMENT ON U.S. ATTITUDE (Rec. 7 p.m.) WASHINGTON, July 19. The Under-Secretary of State (Mr Joseph Grew), replying by letter to a series of questions, assured Senator A. H. Vandenberg that the United States would insist on equal participation if the Polish elections were supervised by any big Power. Concerning the question whether American correspondents would be permitted to send uncensored dispatches from Poland, Mr Gtew said the United States expected such a permit to be granted in order that the American public might be fully informed. Mr Grew reiterated that the American policy regarding Poland continued to be based on the decisions of the Crimea conference. Both Mr Roosevelt and Mr Truman had affirmed that the United States Government stood unequivocally for a strong, free, independent Polish State.
