NEW RAILWAY BUS STATION

PURCHASE OF TODDS’ GARAGE “ CATERING FOR FUTURE TRAFFIC ” The purchase of Todd Motors Garage, at the intersection of Victoria, Durham, and Peterborough streets, for use as a Railway Road Services bus station, has been made. The Minister of Railways (the Hon. R. Semple) yesterday informed “The Press,” in response to inquiries, that the present premises ih which the bus services were established—the Rink Taxis building in Armagh street —were too small, and that there was a likelihood of the premises being sold, on which the Railway Department’s lease would terminate. By acquiring Todd Bros.’ garage, the Railway Department would be enabled to cater more efficiently for the prospective traffic, Mr Semple said. The prospects were that traffic would inevitably increase. The building acquired by the department is a concrete one, with frontages to three streets. It'has been used during the war for the accommodation of Army vehicles. The price at which the property has been purchased has not been disclosed, inquiries last evening leading to answers that nronerties purchased by the Government were not subiected tp approval by the Land Sales Committee. The building which will orobahlv be vacated by the Army in sir weeks, has a total floor space of 32 000 square feet. It is equipped with offices, a women’s waiting room, a workshop, drivers’ room, and other accommodation essential for a transport service The building 'is considered to be almost complete as it stands for a bus station, except for the provision of nits and a n’ace where narce’s may he handled. The space used "o to the present by patrol numns will be us«d for taxis. The building is centrallv heated. The building occupies a triangle, with entrances from the three streets, and a direct entrance w’P also he provided from the intersection o* Victoria and Kilmore streets. The nmy station is two blocks away from the ■'resent station.
