VICTORY HOLIDAYS
Sir,—Could you let me know the position of all casual workers as to the two days’ Victory holiday?. Is is correct that any employee asked to work on those two days is entitled to double pay? What is the position of permanent hands?— Yours,, etc., CURIOUS.' May 14, 1945. [The officer in charge bf the Department of Labour, Christchurch, says: ‘The position is that the Government requested employers to observe the two days as holidays and pay their employees therefor id order that they might take part in the celebrations.
Some concerns carrying on essential services agreed to pay employees who worked on such days double time rates, while others agreed to give them time off later.’’]
