BUTTER RATION
Sir,—Possibly it has not occurred to “Butter” that elderly persons in England or Europe may also need light (if any) breakfasts. They already get far less butter than we do and will get less if we don’t ration (and no milk or porridge possibly). I know many persons over 80 who have only porridge and tea for breakfast and are well and active. Far too many bread meals are eaten in New Zealand for health. I am over 60 but certainly see no need to be less unselfish than younger people. Children under five fare much better on milk puddings, porridge, vegetables, and fruit than on bread and butter, wnich tends to cause acidosis. Some elderly persons save 3oz of butter a week on their ration to make' cakes for overseas.—Yours, etc., NURSE. May 17, 1945.
