FARMERS IN THE ARMY

Sir,—Since the overthrow of the enemy in Europe, we hear in each overseas broadcast the suggested plans Britain is .making to feed the starving millions in the devastated countries. As everyone knows, our own New Zealand is vastly productive, and can help in no small measure to alleviate the terrible suffering and distress; that is, provided we are working at full capacity. Can it be explained in any way why hundreds of our young farmers, married and single, are at present in camp, and as many more expecting to enter very shortly. The present time is the season for the sowing of crops. How can the farms yield a good harvest with such a deplorable shortage of skilled farm labour?— Yours, etc., B, VIGILANT. May 16, 1945.
