At the annual meeting of the Canterbury (N.Z.) Travel Club held in Begg’s concert chamber yesterday the president (Sir Joseph Ward) presided, and said that the club had achieved a proud record of public service. All officers were re-elected. It was decided to send a letter of greeting to Mr B. G. Donovan, who was the club’s auditor since its inception until he went overseas some years ago, and who has just returned to Christchurch. Plans for the future were discussed, and thanks were expressed to the honorary organiser (Mrs A. J. Benzie), the honorary treasurer (Mrs H. Wyatt), and the honorary secretary (Mrs S. S. Floyd). A year ago, on the first birthday of the scheme, the house-to-house sellers of national savings stamps set themselves two targets—to have £IO,OOO saved by the second birthday, which falls this week, and to have enrolled 150 sellers making regular calls from house to house. The first object was, achieved in six months, and by this week the sum of £13,036 has been saved. The second goal has not been reached, the number of sellers being 118. But in July and August the committee intends to make a drive for more sellers. Eleven women’s organisations are acting as stamp sellers, and the Christchurch West High School Old Girls’ Association hats adopted one road in which to sell stamps. An encouraging experiment has been the formation of a Cashmere group, which is doing very well, At the annual meeting of the New Zealand Women Teachers’ Association, held in Wellington, the following officers were elected:—president, Miss A. T. Tizard (South Canterbury); vicepresidents. Miss E. B. Pay (Manawatu), Miss M. V, Kennedy (North Canterbury) ; honorary secretary, Miss G. Jarmsn (North Canterbury); honorary treasurer, Miss E. E. Witty (North Canterbury); committee, Mrs M. M. Barclay (Southland), Miss K. Rains (Auckland), Miss E. Sutherland (Otago),Miss R. Reilly (Wellington), Miss E, M. Harper (North Taranaki). The winter school for women, which last year proved so successful, and which is again being held under the auspices of the Auckland University College advisory committee of adult education, opened on Monday evening at the Epsom Girls’ Grammar School. Associated on the platform with the director (Mr P. Martin Smith) were Mrs R. ‘ S. Judson, chairwoman of the women’s advisory committee, Mr W. H. Cocker, president of the University College Council. As in previous years, a comprehensive programme of group discussions, lectures, demonstrations, and visits to places pf educational interest has been arranged for the school, which will continue until Friday. A successful victory ball organised by the Akaroa Young People’s Patriotic Committee, of which Mr C. Dalbeth is president, was held in .the Oddfellows Hall. Before the arrival of the Ashley Band from Christchurch, dance music was provided by Mrs L. Bailey, Miss N. Ramsay, and Mr L. Hopkins. At the monthly meeting of the Parent-Teacher Association, Elmwood Infant School, the president, Miss E. R. Burn, presided. The aggressive and shy types of children were discussed, the speakers being Mesdames Mair, Robson, Blazey, and walker. Tributes were paid by several speakers to the work of Miss K. Larcombe, dental nurse, to whom a presentation was made on her resignation, to be married.
