CHURCH OF ENGLAND
♦ - ANNUAL CONFERENCE OF MEN’S SOCIETY Delegates from all parts of New Zealand attended the opening session of the Dominion conference of the Church of England Men’s Society held at Christ’s College, Christchurch, yesterday. The Primate of New Zealand (Archbishop. West-Watson) presided, and delegates were accorded a welcome by the Mayor (Mr E. H. Androws)« Introducing Mr Andrews to the delegates, Archbishop West-watson said that he had hpld office as Mayor during a period of stress, and his re-election at the last municipal elections had been a vote of confidence in him and in the Mayoress (Miss E, Couzins). Mr Andrews, said the Archbishop, had never wavered in his testimony to those things which stood first to the Church of England Men’s Society. Extending a welcome to all delegates, the Mayor, said he thought it essential for every church to have its men organised. It had been said (that women were more devout adherents of the Church than men. but that was not true. Men had just as much reverence for the Church and what it stood for. However, there were many people whose religious beliefs lay dormant, and needed “stirring up.” Mr Andrews concluded by expressing good wishes for the success of the conference. The conference will continue until Thursday.^ __
