WHEAT ACREAGE

Sir,— Mr Sullivan, in bis broadcast speech to-night, made an urgent appeal to the farmers of New Zealand for 300,000 acres of wheat, and also stated that the Government would do its utmost to help the fanners reach their objective. Yet Appeal Courts have recently drafted to camp many reservists, thereby creating an acute shortage in farm labour. This is surely not much encouragement to the remaining farmers, most of whom either have walking sticks or are due for the pension. The Government’s appeals will fall on many deaf ears. Mr Sullivan and the Government would do well to consider the present difficulties of farmers before asking for an.lncrease in acreage.—Yours, etCy CAUGHT IN THE DRAFT. April 17, 1045.
