ALLEGED ATTACK ON DETECTIVE
YOUNG MAN COMMITTED - FOR TRIAL (P.A.) WELLINGTON, Oct. 11. In the Magistrate’s Court to-day, Henry Kenny Thomas Carr, a labourer, aged 19, pleaded not guilty to a charge that, with intent to do grievous bodily harm to Detective W. C, Harper, he discharged a loaded firearm at him. Carr was committed to the Supreme Court for trial. Police evidence was that as a result of a message to the police station that accused intended to commit suicide, constables visited the house, and found him with a .22 rifle. After an offer of help, he pointed the rifle at Constable W. R. Wrigley. The constables went out and waited for a party of police. Constable Wrigley said that after the arrival of the police party he heard a ride fired, and obtained a .303 rifle He went up a hill behind accused’s home. He heard the .22 go off three times, and saw accused point the rifle at Detective Harper, who was about 50 yards away. "Acting on instructions I had received, I aimed my rifle at the lower part of accused’s body, and fired. He fell,” said the constable. Detective Harper said Carr fired five shots at him. Accused, was taken to hospital by ambulancfe.
