KINDERGARTEN ASSOCIATION

At the September meeting of the Christchurch Free Kindergarten Association, ' over which Mrs H. T. J. Thacker presided, the principal’s report showed that all the kindergartens had opened with good attendances. Children whose names had been on the waiting-list had been enrolled to take the places' of those eligible to enter primary schools. Dr. Enid Cook advocated the reopening of the afternoon play group at Upper Riccarton, and to this suggestion the association agreed. Beckenham Women’s Committee reported that it had raised the necessary funds for the opening of a kindergarten in that area. It was stated that this would be opened as soon as a qualified director could be appointed, and also one at South Brighton.

A letter was read from the residents of Timaru asking information regarding the formation of a kindergarten in their town. Various supporters offered help in the annual Daffodil Day collection.

The principal, Miss R. Wilkie, notified the executive that many applications had been received from secondary school girls desirous of training as students during the coming year.

WOMEN’S DIVISION OF FARMERS’ UNION

Riccarton.—The ninth birthday of the Riccarton branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers' Union was celebrated by a party held in the Masonic Hall. Totara road, Riccarton. Mrs R. A. Ambridge presided over a meeting of 75 delegates and members of many neighbouring branches, while Mrs Henderson represented the provincial executive, and Mrs A. Morten the women's institutes. A programme consisting of a short play, musical items and an interesting display of antiques, preceded by a short parade by a group of members in Victorian costumes and bathing suits, was enjoyed.

Yaldhurst.—Mrs J. A. Crawford presided at the September meeting of the Yaldhurst branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union. It was reported that cakes had been sent to local servicemen serving overseas in August, and arrangements were made to pack Christmas parcels during this month. Members were asked to bring donations for the leper fund. Winners of the monthly competitions were as follows;—shortbread for overseas parcels: Miss Peagram and Miss M. Curtis (equal) 1; Jar of flowers; Mrs Inch 1. An amusing competition was won by Mrs Doyle. Hostesses were Mesdames Johnstone and Macdonald.
