TURF_GOSSIP wet Tracks There was no fast work at Riccarton yesterday because of wet weather, and only a few trainers had their horses on the tracks. The only horse schooled was Iceland Spar, who jumped four hurdles In a' pleasing manner. He had plenty of nace on, and apart from taking each fence smartly, he showed ability in getting away. Iceland Spar has proved staying powtrs. and provided he keeps as sound as he is at present, he should make good as a hurdler. Attractive Type One of the biggest two-year-olds in commission at Riccarton is Wandering Minstrel. a gelding by Defaulter from High Note, dam of Concertpitch, Irish Fiddle, and Trumpeter Sound. He closely resembles Concertpitch in marking, and like his sire is a very free mover for his size. The youngster was not entered for any of the early two-year-cld races. ! and is not likely to appear in public ! until the late summer or. autumn. He is [ a member of F. Roberts’s team. 1 Changes of Ownership The three-year-old gelding Piccolo has been sold to Mr F. W. Stevens, of Christchurch. at a substantial figure, and Is to remain in R. Wilson’s stable at Riccarton. i Piccolo, a bay by Inflation from Sweet ■’ jjusio by Nigger Minstrel from Kiimiss, was purchased by Mr J. S. Shaw for Messrs J. Musson and W. R. Toon, of Christchurch, at the Trentham yearling tales for 55 guineas, and with one win. a second and a third placing last season, and his win in the John Grigg Stakes last Saturday, he won >£595 in stakes for the partnership. Piccolo will have his first race for his new owner in the Dune- ’ din Guineas next month. ■Another sale made since the Ashburton meeting was that of Scottish Lad, who has been purchased by M. O’Brien, and • will in future be trained by A. McAulay. Scottish Lad is a four-year-old gelding by Gynerium from Lucetta and was purchased as a yearling by Mr D. McFarlane, of Christchurch, for 130 guineas, but although showing early promise, he has failed to race up to expectations, his only placed performance being a second at the Banks Peninsula meeting at Riccarton in March last. Transferred The novice hurdler The Vulture has been transferred to C. G. Humphries’s stable. He was not produced at Ashburton because of corn trouble. Blunt Refusal The Night Raid gelding Saint Joachim was booked to contest the John Grigg Stakes, but defied all efforts to get him to enter a horse float, and he had to be left behind. Promising Form Night Advancei who was responsible for a sound effort in the Novice Stakes at Ashburton, is a three-year-old gelding by Nightly from Cessation by Limond, from Termination by Kllbroney from Culmination by San Francisco from Stepfeldt, and i is trained 'at Riccarton by L. Cavalier for Mrs E. Kennedy. Ration, who also showed prominence In the same race, is a four-year-old gelding by Defoe or Hazrat freon Oread by Sarto from Orlline by De Witte from Ort by The Officer from Oriflamme by Dreadnought. He is trained by S. Barr for Mrs A. Holmes, of Riccarton. • Encouraging The four-year-old gelding Trueway ran his best race for some months in the mile hack race at Ashburton, finishing fast Into fourth place. Trueway Is a brother to Serenata and Representative, but does not seem likely to reach the heights attained by his relatives. ! St. Leger Winner • 1 Tehran, winner of the English St. Leger I Stakes for H.H. the Aga Khan last week, j was bred by Prince Aly Khan and Is \ trained at Newmarket by F. Butters. Teht ran was runner-up to Ocean Swell In the \ Derby in June, and it was stated. that i he was unlucky to auffer a neck defeat. I He had his revenge in the St. Leger, t Ocean Swell filling third place. Tehran’s I sire Bols Roussell, was bred in France, ( and won the Derby in 1938 for Mr P. • Beatty. Tehran's dam Stafaralla is by So--1 larlo from Mlrawaia by Phalarls from I Miranda, sister to Pretty Polly and Adula. i Miranda produced King John, and Adula / Is the third dam of Foxbridge. / Startling Figures / Record entries totalling 380 for eight events have been received for the Ohinemurl Jockey Club’s spring meeting at Paeroa on September 30. The Taumarunul Stakes, for horses that have not won a race of any description at a totalisator meeting, has drawn 101 entrants, and there are 85 In the Kerepeehl Hack Handicap. At Wanganui The public had a good innings on the concluding day of the Wanganui Jockey Club’s spring meeting when they selected six winning favourites, says the ‘‘Dominion.” Six of the eight races were won by the top-weight, and five of these were the first fancy. The Wanganui Guineas was won by the Wanganui-trained Alright, who was a slightly better favourite than Master Ted. Unfortunately an interesting contest was marred by a melee at the home turn, which may have affected the result, Tifox was the pacemaker; at this stage, with Master Ted on the outer, and Alright trailing them. As they swung Into line for the run home Tifox hung out and carried Master, Ted with him, thus giving Alright an opening on the rails, and he quickly dashed > through into the lead. Broughton, on Master Ted, did his best to force Tifox b>adk to a straight line, and the jostling that ensued cost both Master Ted and TUfox a winning chance. Master Ted then gee off after Alright and ran him to half * length, with Tifox three lengths away. Tha other three runners were not equal to t'toe occasion and were outclassed. Alright has'now won at his only two starts. He ih a three-year-old gelding by Inflation (from Damarls, by Limond, and Is ownett and trained by Mr L. G.,Paul, of Wangtanul. Damarls won the Wanganui Gulnefas In 1927 for her breeder, Mr G. M. Carrie. (pRALDINE R.C. 1 ACCEPTANCES (P.A.) \ TIMARU, September 19.
