OVERBRIDGE AT KAIAPOI

ERECTION URGED BY RESIDENTS A representative meeting of the residents of Kaiapoi, under the chairmanship- of the Mayor, the Rev. W. H. A. Vickery, was held last evening to ‘discuss the proposed overhead bridge at Kaiapoi over the railway, the scene of two fatal accidents in recent months. Mr F. D. Grant, engineer to the Main Highways Board, explained the plan proposed and answered questions. A possible alternative to the overhead bridge was discussed at length, but was considered impracticable. . Mr C. Morgan Williams, M.P., said: “The bridge must go oyer." The cost of an overhead bridge compared favourably with the employment of cross-ing-keepers or the maintenance of a mechanical gate. ... The following resolution was passed unanimously:—“ That this meeting is of the opinion that the proposed overhead bridge is for the greatest good of the greatest number, and as such should be approved."
