BEYOND WORDS
[By WHIM WHAM.) The fifth Day of Invasion Is hardly an Occasion For casual Versifying— It’s almost pointless, trying. Just now the Situation Beggars Imagination. Some air-borne Fancy might Suppose the End in Sight, On wishful Wings joy-riding, Berlinward swiftly gliding; As if the Atlantic Wall, Like Jericho’s, would fall Merely to martial Din, And let the Victors in! That Optimist is quelled By him who feels compelled To put him in his Place— He of the lengthened Face Who Fifty Times has said, “A hard Fight lies ahead.” What Cliches get an Airing! What Platitudes past Bearing! Oh, home-based Strategists, Be dumb! Oh, Analysts, Be prudent, or amuse Yourselves with other News!
