MEAT FREEZING POSITION
MR A. P. O’SHEA’S COMMENT
EFFECT OF DRY WEATHER AND STOPPAGES
(P.A.) WELLINGTON, January 10. ‘‘The meat freezing position in New Zealand at the moment can be described only as tragic,” said the Dominion secretary of the Farmers’ Union (Mr A. P. O’Shea) to-day. The Government and Meat Board had appealed to the farmers to put more weight oh their lambs.
Most of them had loyally tried to do so, he said. However, with the shutdown of works over the Christmas period and the stoppages which had occurred since then, it looked as if a large number of lambs were going to be lost.
The dry weather showed no sign of breaking. Consequently lambs which should have been killed and had not been killed were going back seriously in condition.
“It is quite obvious that labour will have to be diverted to the freezing industry and that stoppages will have to cease; otherwise New Zealand can justly be accused of letting Britain down,” said Mr O’Shea.
