FARM WORKERS AND ARMY SERVICE

(P.A.) WELLINGTON, November 26. No blanket exemption of farm workers from military service is intended by the National Service Department. Where a man is called for military service his case goes, if necessary, before an appeal board, and each case is judged on its merits, it is authoritatively stated. This is contrary to the statement by the secretary (Mr A. B. Struthers) at a meeting of the South Canterbury executive of the Farmers’ Union. No move has been made to prevent men from joining the armed forces if they are called up other than through a decision of an appeal board. It is pointed out that naturally appeal boards are aware of the need for retaining skilled workers on farms.
