LAWN TENNIS

COMPETITION ENTRIES MAINTAINED FEWER SERVICE TEAMS THIS YEAR Although the reduction of Army establishments has been reflected in a big decline in the number of teams from the services, the Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association's inter-club competitions, which will begin on October 20, have drawn a bigger total entry than last year. Entries were reviewed by the association's competitions committee last evening, and members considered that there were prospects for an excellent season. Features of the entries are the popularity of the under 21 mixed grade, winch has attracted eight entries this year whereas last year the competition had to be abandoned for lack of support, and a -return to small entries for the senior men’s grade. Last year there were 24 entries in this grade, but four eventually were unable to compete because of the transfer of military units. Of the remaining 20, which were divided into two sections, all but three were entered by the services. This year only four entries have been received so far—Elmwood A and B, North Linwood, and Air Force. It is expected, however, that two or more Army teams, a team from Woolston, headed by the Wellington Wilding Shield player. R. McKenzie, and possibly another North Linwood team will also compete. Four teams have been entered in the senior women’s competition, Elmwood, North Linwood, Redcliffs, and Air Force. There will be eight teams in the first grade mixed, and eight in the second grade mixed. The committee decided to open the season on November 13, with an open day at Wilding Park, when all members of affiliate! clubs will be the guests of the president, Mr J. Mercer. The senior men’s and women’s and the senior mixed competitions will start on November 20. and the other grades on the following Saturday, and rounds will be played on alternate weeks by the two groups.
