TURF GOSSIP

Nominated for Motukarara , Nominations received for the-. annual Labour Day meeting at Motukarara of the North Canterbury Racing Club, associated with the Amberley and Hororate Racing Clubs, total 190, against 165 received for last year’s on the same course. There are 18 in the North Canterbury Handicap. 15 i " .™ e Will Memorial Handicap, 23 m the Highweight Hack Handicap. 40 in the Ttial Plate. 27 in the Hororata Hack, Handicao, and 28 in the Amberley Hack Handicap. While the bulk of the horses hail from Riccarton. South Canterbury and North Otago stables are represented in the list. Handicaps will be available next Friday. The going at Wingatuf on Saturday was the heaviest for a, spring meeting for many vears, and was even more holding than at the winter meeting In June, in consequence many horses made poor showings at handling the tricky ground, which became progressively worse in the process of drying out. As at Trentham* when the ground is wet. horses can get through it reasonably well, but when it begins to dry out and becomes sticky, it provides what can be described as almost treacherous footing. On Saturday, there' were patches of fairly firm ground, but there were also soft patches, and these helped towards the several failures. Guineas Candidates The two classic events, the Dunedin Guineas and the McLean Stakes, provided good contests, but with such track conditions it was hardly possible to form a sound Idea as to the class, of young horses engaged. On the other hand, the public summed up the two fields very capably, as both Royal Flight and Lyndal were win favourties. Royal Flight s success was decisive, and although she may not develop into a stayer,'she will win more good races, and. at the present stage, she must appeal as a Stewards Handicap candidate. Although well beaten by Royal Flight, Invulnerable can be expected to turn the tables' on her In later conflicts. He attracted much notice, not only by his appearance and free style of going, but also by his excellent race, in spite of a check in his preparation. The Siegfried gelding will certainly be a worthy Derby candidate. John o*'London, as anticipated, did not handle the ground well. He showed plenty of ppeed until he began to feel the effects about a furlong from home, and he finished about eight lengths from the winner. He was disappointing, but Judgment an him will have to be deferred until he encounters a firm track. , Langue d’Or shaped very poorly. He did not seem able to settle down to .his task over the first few furlongs, and his rider then wisely decided not to knock him about. Langue o’Or was some 20 lengths away from the third horse, and Great Legend was still further back. The latter is growing into a big colt, and will take more time.

The Juveniles Lyndal, winner of the McLean Stakes, is a smallish filly by Man's Pal from Hall Note, and is a member of a well-per-formed family, Half Note being by Paper Money from Pink Terrace by Tractor from All Pink, dam also of Note. Pink Terrace was a good winner, her successes including the New Zealand Oaks in 1926. Half Note, owned by D. J. McDonald, is the dam of the Rlccarton-trained Irish Note, by Irish Lancer, held under lease by F. Roberts from McDonald. Half Note was sent to Riverton when carrying Irish Note, and the mare and youngster were looked after by Mr D. Ruthven, who was recompensed by McDonald by being given the next foal from the mare, and this was Saturday’s winner. Most of those present at Wingatui had never heard of Lyndal before, but apparently she had shown some encouraging form on the favourable Riverton tracks iri recent weeks, as she was the win favourite from the opening of the machine. She is no doubt speedy, but at the same time does not seem the type to early her record very far, a failing evidently of her sire’s progeny. Runaway, an aptly-named son of Wild Chase and Traction by Tractor from Droski, gave a pleasing performance in spite of having done very little work owing to the bad tracks at Wingatui. He had a useful lead turning into the home run, but was soon headed by the winner. He is a likely improver, and should help towards placing Wild Chase on the winning sire’s map. Piccolo was the only Rlccarton' youngster to shape at all well. He is a bay gelding by Inflation from Sweet Music, by Nigger Minstrel from Kllmlss by Kllboy, and was purchased by Mr J. S. Shaw for 55 guineas at Trentham,. on behalf of Mr J. Musson, of Christchurch. Both Lalla M6er and Lady Desirable were prominent in the middle of the field to the straight entrance and they then petered out, while the grey Foxbridge colt Falcohbridge, lost any chance he had by dwelling on , the mark. The Riecarton rer bresentatives should all benefit -from the trip, and as they were not given hard races, they are not likely to suffer , any ill-effects from galloping in trying going. Early two-year-old racing has always provided a debatable subject, but to race them early in heavy going opens up another point for discussion. A Big Filly Dark Diana, who showed up at one stage of the McLean Stakes, is a big brown filly by Phaleron Bay from Golden Rod, and was purchased as a yearling by J. W. Pankhurst after being passed ,in at the Trentham sales for 250 guineas. She is a sister to Supercharged, who was also purchased as a yearling by Pankhurst, but died from internal trouble after showing much promise last season. Dark Diana will probably take more time than many of those in Saturday’s field, but she appeals as one likely to reach high class. Other Contestants ./

Espadrille, one of the unplaced lot in the McLean Stakes, is a bay filly by Paper Slipper from Sea Raid by Night Raid from the Martian mare, Sea Maid. She closely resembles her sire in mark* ings, but cannot yet boast of much size. Wild Cry, who was one of the early leading division, is a half-brother by Pink Coat to Wild Career and Fair Trial and races in the same interests as that pair. Dietetic was the first of Defaulter’s progeny to race in the South Island. She is a well grown filly, and was prominent for a good way. Her dam, Calandra, is by Shambles from denied! by Glenculloch from Lady Dundas, and the filly is racing in the interests of the trustees of the late Mr J. McQuilkin. Bombay Ownership

The Foxbridge—Rippling Waters colt, who brought the highest price at the January yearling sales, has been named Hormuz. He is owned by Mr F. H. Mehta, and for the same owner other two-year-olds have been named as follows:—Ch f Revelation—Min Lu, Tuis: b c Phaleron Bay—Miss Pippin, Ascot Blend; ch c Vermeer—Coronis, Battle Shield. Messrs V. Rosenthal and F. G. Travers, Bombay, have registered Black Simon for the Revelation—Lone Flier colt, and Sunstream for the Lang Bian—Araunette fill-f, both in P. Spratt’s stable.
