GOVERNOR-GENERAL’S SPEECH
Sir,—Sir Cyril Newall has given ns food for thought by mentioning the danger of long-haired intelligent people becoming influential. If we tear their hair out what evidence of intelligence will remain anywhere? Perhaps the Italians are demonstrating it, as evidently they were clever enough to know when it was half-time and changed sides in this war; though against that they have ousted Mussolini, who is short enough of intellect, hair, or integrity to suit the most devoted worshipper of Mars. —Yours, etc..
H. J. BUTTLE. Barfield, October 8, 1943.
Sir,—l was amazed by the speech our Governor-General recently delivered to boy scouts at Wellington. To say that ‘‘intelligent long-haired people" led England to disarmament after the last war and almost to destruction is a misleading utterance to make to children. Why not tell the children how “unintelligent short-haired people” armed Germany, sent scrap iron to Japan, etc., behind the backs of war-weary men and women who were seeking for a lasting peace, and considered disarmament for every nation a good beginning?— Yours, etc., H.S. Rangioi a. October 9. 1943.
