ACUTE SHORTAGE OF TELEPHONES
1700 SUBSCRIBERS NOW ON WAITING LIST
There is still an acute shortage of. telephones and subsidiary equipment in Christchurch, mainly because of the difficulty of obtaining supplies from overseas. Officials of the Post snd Telegraph Department said yesterday that there were approximately 1700 people waiting for the installation of telephones in Christchurch, and it was not expected that there would be any improvement in the near future. Names on the waiting list are kept in strict order of the date on which application was made. Every consideration is given where any special fac-t tors, such as sickness, are concerned. Supplies of hand telephones are exhausted, and therefore requests for tms type have had to be refused. The total number of subscribers in the Christchurch exchange area.is approximately 13,000. , There has also been a steady demand for telephones from business firms, as well as .private subscribers. Business firms are treated in the same manner, except that if the business is essential to the prosecution of the war effort every endeavour is made to give some priority to its request.
