COST OF LIVING
Sir,—lf the Hon. Walter Nash expects to be taken seriously in regard to his statement that the cost of living has advanced a mere 13i per cent, he must be a super optimist. The housewives of New Zealand, in his opinion, must surely be lacking in comprehension. Why, that amount would barely cover the increase in footwear running to the store for their daily ration of bread. No, the housewives know to their sorrow that this Government is grinding the faces of the homekeepers; their noses are surely on the grindstone. It would be interesting to know just how much is being paid, by way of subsidy, to camouflage the prices of sugar; flour, and other commodities in daily use in the home. The family man is surely getting a raw deal and, the irony of it, from a Labour Government.—Yours, etc.,
HIRAM HUNTER. September 13,1943.
