MIDDLE EAST MAILS

Sir, —In your issue of September 6 an article appeared which originated in Cairo informing us that a record mail had been received. One would ordinarily assume that this was something commendable, but we who have boys in the Middle East think otherwise. It is eight weeks since surface mail arrived from our son, although he writes weekly. We also write weekly and know that he receives our mail in batches at long intervals. Airgraphs cannot take the place of letters owing to their restricted nature. Air mail to and from the Middle East ceased of necessity when Japan entered the war. We are now informed that that danger has passed and there appears no reason why air mail cannot be resumed. Troops in the Pacific receive and send mail by air weekly. Ane not troops in the Middle East and their relatives entitled to similar consideration?— Yours, etc., _ WRITE HOME FIRST.

September 9, 1943. [lt was stated at the Chief Post Office yesterday that surface mails are forwarded from New Zealand as quickly as the availability of shipping space will permit. Regarding air mails, regular dispatches are made by the routes available.]
