GONE BACK ON WORKERS
—*— Former Labour M.P.’s Opinion
That the Labour Government had “gone back on the workers” was the opinion expressed at a recent meeting by Mr H, E. Herring, who was Labour M.P. for Mid-Caqterbury in 1935-38. Mr Herring condemned the Industrial Emergency Regulations as an attack on the workers, altering to their detriment hours of work, overtime rates and conditions of employment. The council set up under the regulations, and appointed by the Minister of Labour, had power to set aside acts of Parliament and awards of the Court of Arbitration. ■ Compare that treatment of workers with that toward such men as Colonel Pharazyn, former secretary of the clerical workers’ union, who is now receiving £SO a week in the United States; and with the increase in rate of military pay, colonels going up £1 a day and privates 6d. Those are examples of how Labour has gone back on the workers and on its professed policy. To-day Labour is dominated by Messrs Fraser and Nash and the rest are “yes-men.” —l9
