The Chokebore gelding Anchorage, by Winning Hit from Fast Passage, was responsible for a very creditable effort in filling second place to Renarde at Ashburton on Saturday, as he was slow away and was well back when the straight was reached. This race suggested he will do well this season. Improving . . Roman Son has shown Improvement In his racing this season, and his patient owner may soon get a winning turn with him. His third placing at Ashburton on Saturday had some merit in it, as he carried 71b overweight. Expensive Standby was the medium of some solid wagering in his Ashburton engagement, in which he carried 41b overweight. He went well for more than three-quarters of the mile journey,' but was well beaten a furlong from home.

Stood on Mark Though many horses in the Penscroft Hack Handicap at Ashburton were -restless at the barrier, Hotch Potch stood .like the proverbial sheep, and never moved from the time she breasted the tape, but when the field was dispatched she stood flat-footed and lost enough grouhd to make her task hopeless. Showed Pace

Kurawhi gave Indications by his race at Ashburton that he will be -more prominent later In the season. He showed a turn of speed In keeping Standby company in front to well Into the straight, but then began to drift.

Later Prospects The good-looking three-year-old colt St. Nattar was in a prominent position commencing the run home in the Novice Stakes at Ashburton, but did not carry on. No doubt the race would do him a lot of good, and he will be seen to better advantage later.

In the Limelight Chellow Dene, who attracted notice by some useful work in the Novice Stakes at Ashburton, is a three-year-old gelding by Solicitor General from Folk Lore, an Australian-bred mare by Dark Legend from Susie Pye, by Wallace Isinglass from Radesia, by Radium, and is being raced by Mr C. Holdsworth, for whom he is trained by F. Christmas. The winner, Langue d’Or, Is also trained by Christmas, who at present controls a large team. Suspension Increased The appeal of the jockey 1 , A, R. T. Beale, against his suspension for three months, imposed on him by the stewards of the Pakuranga Hunt for interference with Forest Glen when riding Huirangl Sun in the Pakuranga Hunt Cup at Ellerslie on August 21, was dismissed by the Auckland District Committee, which increased the period of suspension to six months.—(P.A.) A Theio Chestnut

Whitley, who accompanied In Chancery for a good way in the Novice Stakes, is a chestnut three-year-old gelding by Theio from Odavarb, by .Iliad from Bravado, and was purchased by his present owner, Mr P. F. Campbell, for 70 guineas as a yearling. Very few, chestnut productions of Theio have made good, but Whitley may prove to be an exception.

Successful Stable The New Plymouth trainer H. Dulieu had a good day at Marton on Saturday, winning the chief event with Broieveine and the Plying Handicap with Whackle, while his two-year-old Martial Note deadheated with Master Ted in the Debutant Stakes. TROTTING NOTES A Young Reinsraan C. Bryce, who drove Prince Grattan to victory at Ashburton on Saturday, is a son of J. Bryce, jun. In his only previous appearance in a sulky he was successful behind Fancy Goods at Forbury Park. Rehandicaps Radical has been penalised 48yds in the Geraldine Trot, and Prince Grattan has been rehandicapped to 48yds in the Orari Trot at the Geraldine Racing Club’s meeting on Saturday, At Trentham

Manpower was the first to show out in the Sir Thomas Wilford Memorial Handicap at Trentham on Saturday, says the “Dominion,” but at the end of a furlong Sports Guide ran to the front in an endeavour to win all the way, his nearest opponents being Follow Me, Manpower, and Black Label. There was practically no change till well into the straight. At the distance Black Label came through on the rails, while Sports Guide came out into the middle of the course. Black Label finished too well for Sports Guide, who went under by half a length. Wellington Stakes Scottish Emperor finished with a turn of speed in the Wellington Stakes and wore Acropolis down over the last 50 yards. Paul Collette ran almost over to the lawn fence at the start, but passing the members’ stand raced to the front from Plunder Bar, Acropolis, and Scottish Emperor. At the six furlong post Plunder Bar had charge from Paul Collette. Native Scott, Acropolis, and Scottish Emperor. Acropolis made a forward move rounding the bend, but plunder Bar still had charge as they turned for home, and Acropolis appeared to have the race won a furlong from home, but could not withstand the challenge of Scottish Emperor, who won by a neck. Plunder Bar and Paul Collette were next. Favourite Beaten Follow Me outstayed Sports Guide to win the Wellington Handicap. The latter lost substantia] ground at the start, and in the circumstances did well to finish where he did. Kewple’s Jewel finished well in third place, with Jerry Parrish fourth

Impressive Success Radical gave an attractive performance in winning the Selma Trot at Ashburton on Saturday. Playwright was the early leader, but with seven furlongs to go Lockheed opened up a break of about six lengths from Gold Peg, Bons,- and Radical. The last-named, always under restraint to the straight entrance, was given his head commencing the run home, and he had Lockheed in trouble nearly a furlong from the post, easing up at the post with a lot in hand. Gold Peg, who was slow to get going early, hung on for a fair third placing, about six lengths in front of Princess Maritaa, who

also failed to go off correctly. Bons beaded the-remainder. Third Favourite Wins Prince Grattan and Knave of Diamonds were both slow over the early stages of the Bakaia Trot, but fought out the finish. Warline, Thumbs Up, and Communique comprised the leading division for most of the journey, and they entered the straight in close order with Prince Grattan and Knave of Diamonds in handy positions. The run home had not long been entered upon before Prince Grattan shot to the front, and Knave of Diamonds followed him. The latter put in some sound work, but was always held safe by Prince Grattan. Thumbs Up was a good third two lengths in front of Golden Shadow, with Warline, Communique, and Motto next. Veteran Drivers An interesting feature of the Bakaia Trot at Ashburton on Saturday was the inclusion of two veterans of the trotting sport in the list of drivers. These were J. Bryce and A. Hendriksen, who no doubt had to fill gaps caused by the absence of the younger brigade in Wellington. The former drove Golden Shadow and Hendriksen was behind Dinghy. Golden Shadow did the better of the pair by finishing In fourth place, and Dinghy, who was not well placed during the middle stages, finished well back. Both veterans figured prominently in years gone by, Bryce winning the New Zealand Cup on no fewer than four occasions, with Cathedral Chimes in 1915, Ahrurirl in 1925 and 1926, and Red Shadow in 1933. Hendriksen drove Albert to victory in 1912, and was behind Country Belle when she won the race.
