Members of the Fendalton Garden Club met yesterday at the home ol Mrs J. W. N. Mclntosh, Park lane, to hear an address given by Mr J. Milne on the cultivation of vegetables. The president, Mrs A. R. Blank, presided, and a competition for the best bloom was won by Mrs David Crozier, with Mrs J. Roy Smith second and Mesdames C. H. Clemens, and M. W. Simes third equal. It was decided to-make a donation of £2 2s to the Fendalton sub-branch of the Plunket Society. The monthly social of the Cambrian Society of Canterbury was held in Hay’s lounge on Saturday evening. The president, Mr J. G. Parry, presided over a large gathering of members and friends, who enjoyed a concert programme arranged by Miss Bessie Pollard. Items were contributed by Misses Lily Robertson. Marjorie Chapman, and Bessie Pollard, Miss Jean Scott, Mr John Scott, Mesdames Beryl Windsor, and Florence Dalton. Supper was served by members of the committee. To celebrate the birthday of the Crippled Young Women’s Club under the honorary directorship of Mrs Olive Gee, a party was held on Saturday evening in the Y.M.C.A. Concert Hall. Mrs W. MacKay, before cutting the birthday cake, gave a brief account of the progress of the club. A programme arranged by Miss Margaret Weavers, assistant leader, and Mrs J. Henderson, was enjoyed. Members of the Crippled Young Men’s Club, Miss G. Newell, and Mr G. Challis were amongst the guests present. Supper at the Welcome Club on Saturday night was served to a large gathering of servicemen by the St. Albans Knitting Circle of the General Service Corps The exhibition of blitz pictures of London, which has been shown in Christchurch for the last, week, has been well patronised by all who realise the plight London has been placed in when silently fighting Hitler and his satellites. A total of £ 122 5s 3d has been collected for patriotic purposes. The exhibition of these inspiring pictures will be carried on for the next seven days, by which time, it is honed, a very much larger sum will be collected. A new development of Red Cross work will be marked in the setting up of the professional board of the New Zealand Red Cross Society, which will undertake the setting of all examination papers in first aid. home nursing, and hygiene and sanitation, thus ensuring a more uniform standard of training throughout New Zealand. This board will deal with any revision of text books which may be necessary from time to time in order to keep up with the new methods of treatment tnat may be approved and adopted by the medical and nursing professions. These were decisions at a meeting of the Dominion V.A.D. Council of the New Zealand Red Cross Society held last week in Wellington. Plans are under way at the Women’s War Service Auxiliary for a recruiting campaign to be launched early in October for more land girls, to help to overcome the difficulty of getting labour on farms. “Girls who are working on farms are doing one of the most essentia] war jobs by producing food for consumption in New Zealand and overseas,"said Miss A.
