Time, Imin 45sec, TURF GOSSIP Late Dividends Arrangements have been made by the Ashburton Racing Club for late dividends to be paid at the totalisator department of the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club, 90 Armagh street, Christchurch. —1 Rehandicapped Penalties as follows have been declared for the Geraldine Racing Club’s meeting;— Hurdles Handicap: Maggiore ioib making 9-11; Geraldine Cup, Royal Flight 41b, making 7-12: Raukapuka Hack Handicap, Renarde 91b, making 8-3; Sauatters’ Handicap, St. Cloud 61b, making 8- Royal Flight 41b, making 7-12. Expensive Oversights For a breach of Rule 242 of the Rules of Racing by not notifying the existence of a joint interest, which necessitated the bracketing of Kurawhl and Kilcato in' the Penscroft Hack Handicap at Ashburton, Mr P. F. Campbell owner of Kurawhi and Mr W. Barr owner of Kilcato, were each fined £5, which ’is the minimum fine laid down by the rule. Mr Campbell applied to have his case heard by the judicial committee, but after hearing his evidence, the committee decided that, under the rule, it had no option but to uphold the Imposition of the fine. Belated Success Renarde made amends for several failure- by a comfortable win In the Penscroft Hack Handicap at Ashburton. Her track form had often pointed to her prospects of making a return, but she did not race as generously as might be expected. On Saturday, however, she drew to the front early in the run home, and although strongly challenged by Anchorage, she held on gamely to gain a halflength victory. Anchorage,' having his first race for some time, gave an encouraging' display, and better placed during the middle stages would have given the whir ner more trouble. Homan Son showed further improvement by filling third place, beating Abdicate by a head. Not Reasonable

The absurd position created by the declaration of handicaps for the Geraldine meeting four days before the Ashburton meeting is exemplified in the cases of Magglore and St. Cloud. For winning the County Hurdles Maggiore has incurred a penalty bringing her weight to 9-11, but Heidelberg, who finished second could not be rehandicapped and remains at his weight 10-9. St. Cloud beat Sham Boy by half a length In the Spring Handicap, and has been penalised 61b, while Sham Boy is not affected. Several horses in minor places at Ashburton are not engaged at Geraldine, and the 1 instances of unfairness are not as mknerous as could easily be the case, but this fact does not dismiss the opinion that the most satisfactory and equitable system would have been for the handtoaps to be declared today and acceptances to close to-morrow. This arrangement was carried out by the Ashburton Club without any apparent inconvenience. First as Hurdler Magglore has not taken long to make good as a hurdler, and her win at Ashburton on Saturday was full of merit. She had to make the pace from the early stages, and in spite of a faulty jump at the last fence, which cost her some ground and nearly deprived her of her apprentice rider, she had an" easy win. Heidelberg made a game effort from the last fence home, but could not get up. Norse, always one of the leading division, was a fair third, a neck in front of Taxpayer, who showed promise rounding the home turn, but petered out in the straight. Sign of the Times The scarcity of established hurdle horsemen nowadays was made evident-by the fact that six of the eight riders in Saturday’s race at Ashburton were apprentices. and three of them filled the places. K Wilson, who was having his second ride la a hurdle race, was thrown when his mount, Midgard, misjudged the first fence. Wilson lay where he fell fot some time, but soon recovered, and rode in the following event, Midgard fell at the third fence at the Ashburton meeting fn May last, causing serious Injuries to his rider. A. Leach, who is still unable to resume his calling.

Back Into Saddle Gay Parade was in strong demand for Saturday's hurdle race, but ruined any chance he had by a bad jump about five furlongs from home. He fell on his knees, but his rider, R. Register, made a. remarkable recovery. The horse, however, was then in a hopeless position. Gay Parade was produced in the Spring Handicap, but after being fairly prominent early, was a long way back at the finish. Finishing On Sir Gundi has invariably lost ground at the starts of his races by backing out when the barrier rose, and on Saturday he was tried with blinkers, but these did not have the desired effect, as he stood still when the field went off, and was well in the rear when he did elect to move away His rider used vigorous efforts over the first furlong to reduce the big gap, but Sir Gundi was still in last place turning for home. He then put in some telling work, and was beaten only by a head by Good Scout for third place. Early Juvenile Classic Master Ted, who dead-heated with Martial Note in the Debutant Stakes at the Wanganui meeting on Saturday, is a bay colt by Brer Fox from Billet by Acre from Rill, by San Fran from Spring by Quilt and is owned and trained by R. Barlow, of New Plymouth. Martial Note is a black colt by Battle Song from Endorse by Paper Money from Epitaph and was bred by Mr J. E. P. Cameron, of Timaru, who sold him for <OO guinesa at Trentham to Mr M. J. Moodabe, of Auckland. Silvio, the favourite for Saturday’s race, and the third place-getter, is a chestnut col* by Lang Blan from Love of Silver oy Silverado from Amourette, and is a half-brother to Indian Princess. Silvio was bred by Mr H. Hassall, of Hastings, and was sold at the Trentham sales for 900 guineas to his present owner, Mr S. J. Newland, of Wellington.
