AN EXPERIMENT TO AVOID
Those electors who think that the “experiment” of prohibition might well be tried in New Zealand should consider the experience of history.
That experiment has been made several times, and always it has proved a disastrous failure, both morally and economically. In the United States, where the “experiment” lasted 14 years, prohibition proved the most colossal and calamitous failure in history. The attempts at enforcement cost billions of dollars, and the experiment brought in its train contempt of the law, violence, crime, and sudden death. No wonder that the prohibition law was ultimately repealed by the biggest majority ever recorded on any question. All the world has rejected prohibition. The United Nations will have none of it. The “experiment” has failed wherever tried. New Zealand should heed the experience of history and hold fast to Liberty, Go to the Poll and again vote Continuance. Strike out the two bottom lines. —l9
