AUSTRALIAN HOME
SERVICE IN OUTER ISLANDS
(Rec. 93 pm.) SYDNEY. Sept. 12. . A ne'w assessment of the strategical importance of islahds close to Australia but not at present included within the zone of militia service, is likely, says the Canberra correspondent of the Sydney “Sun;” Mr Curtin is continuing to emphasise the Vital importance to Australia of the American Philippines, the Dutch East Indies, Portuguese Timor, and French New Caledonia.
The correspondent says that the Philippines, part of the Netherlands East Indies, and New Caledonia are outside the present sphere of operations for the Australian militia. His constant stressing of the importance of these islands suggests that Mr Curtin considers them to be as vital to Australia as those, islands now included in the Militia Bill, now that the war is flowing back towards Japan.
