ASSOCIATION ENGLISH CUP MATCHES AIR FORCE AND WESTERN IN FINAL The semi-final of the English Cup knock-out competition was played on Saturday. At English Park Western had an ea&y win over a scratch Thistle side by 9 to 2, and at Hagley Park Air Force in a close game narrowly defeated Shamrock by 2 goals to 0. .. _ . Air Force will meet Western in the final at English Park next Saturday. WESTERN V. THISTLE

At English Park it was soon evident that Thistle was no match for the Western eleven. While Western has remalneo practically intact over the last few years. Thistle, particularly this season, has had to work hard to field even a scratch sloe. Saturday proved no exception, and it was left to the veteran players to put up the defence. Poor passing further enhanced Western’s chances of keeping possession of the ball. E. Hall, especially, and A. Sutherland, were Thistle's outstanding men. Grice on furlough, filled the centre forward position well until he had to retire shortly after the interval. O’Rawe, at Inside right, gave a mixed display. B. White and T. Milne were the best of the rest. McMillan, in goal, gave a good display for a youngster.

Western played an attacking type of game throughout, making the back line shoulder most of the defence which, even if they were seldom pressed . hard, they did well. The Western halves backed up their forwards well, and in the latter department G. Smith and R. Dowker were the pick. J. Smith did not show up so well in field play, but made amends with some particularly deadly shooting. Goals were scored for Western by J. Smith (4), R. Dowker (3), G. Smith, and A. Green. E. Hall and J. White scored for Thistle. Referee: Mr C. Sweeney. AIR FORCE v. SHAMROCK

The game at Hagley Park resolved itself into a forwards’ match. In this sphere Air Force was superior, positional play, finish, and ball control being better than Shamrock’s. Shamrock had some great scoring opportunities, but indecision in key positions cost them more than one goal. P. Fox showed most initiative in possession. Air Force possessed two good inside men in Adams and Stone, who besides backing up the spearhead of the attack, also put in good work with the halves. The half lines of both sides played well with Air Force slights better in backing up to hold a territorial advantage. The defence of the teams was sound. F. Adams scored twice for Air Force. Referee, Sergeant T. Waddell.
