SHORTAGE OF SHIPPING
“ POSITION TOO SERIOUS FOR EXCUSES” VIEWS OP MANUFACTURERS* PRESIDENT “The position is too serious to be answered by excuses,” said Mr A. M. Hollander, president of the Canterbury Manufacturers’ Association, when commenting yesterday on suggestions that the association was wrong in stating that there was a shortage of shipping between the South Island and the North Island. “Our position is that the glut of goods awaiting shipment is more serious than has ever been experienced by local manufacturers and commercial men,” added Mr Hollander. “This has got to be dealt with immediately by the people concerned. If it is a question of better management in getting these goods away our association will continue to press for the necessary reorganisation. to be made to obviate the present conditions.” A conference to discuss present shipping difficulties is to be held next Wednesday among representatives of the Lyttelton Harbour Board, the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce, the Canterbury Manufacturers’ Association, the Railway Departmentt and the shipping companies.
