TYRES FOR FARM TRACTORS

FACTORY CONTROLLER’S STATEMENT Stocks of farm tractor pneumatic tyres, plus supplies which are coming forward, should provide sufficient replacements to the end of this year for such ti’actors as are already fitted with pneumatic tyres. This information is contained in a statement received from the Factory Controller (Mr G. A. Pascoe) by the Wheat and Flour Controller (Mr R. McPherson). Mr McPherson said that because of inquiries made at meetings of wheatgrowers held during the wheatgrowing campaign, the question of the supply of tractor tyres had been taken up with the Factory Controller, who was asked to make an early announcement so that farmers would know how they stood and whether or not they had to make early arrangements to convert to steel wheels. The statement continues; "Present indications are that there is no immediate necessity to convert to steel. The Ministry of Supply’s policy is to maintain farm tractors on rubber if at all possible and negotiations are being conducted on that basis. This applies only to such tractors as are already fitted with rubber tyres. In view of rubber shortage no attempt can be made to convert steel-tyred tractors to rubber. “Applications for tyres should be addressed to the local Oil Fuel Committees, which will deal with them in the light of recommendations received from the appropriate primary production committee.

“Farmers are urged to take all care of their tyres and to explore the possibilities of repairing or retreading before applying for new tyres. Retreading facilities are available in New Zealand for the following sizes: 500/16, 600/16. 600 10. 750'16. 750/20, 750/18, 900/24, 1125/24, 1275/24.”
