Coal production from the Grey Valley, handled by the railways, is at a high level and averages 1900 tons a day. In addition about 300 tons daily are being _ railed from the Westoort district. During April 3563 tons of coal were consigned through the Buffer Gorge for east coast destinations. All lend-lease articles of value to the farming community arc to be supplied only on the presentation of certificates of authorisation issued by District Primary Production Councils. Mr J. Mulcare. secretary-organiser of the West Coast Council, explained that, while the initial information was not comprehensive, it appeared that these articles would include all classes of farm machinery, fencing wire, etc., the object apparently being to restrict to the minimum the use of loase-lend imports. Applicants would have to obtain a certificate signed by the secre-tary-organiser and one other member of the council to the effect that the proposed purchase would be absolutely essential to the farm in question. “One can sometimes try too hard when stating a case for a returned man.” said Mr A. C. Piper, secretary of the Oamaru Returned Services’ Association, at the monthly meeting of the executive.
