THE MAORI PIGEON

Sir, —I desire to record my protest at the proposed slaughter of the native pigeons. It was the late H. G. Ell who, in 1906, stood up for Native Bird Protection Acts. In 1906 the Maoris of Parihaka destroyed 3000 tuis. By commercialising huia feathers at £1 each, that bird was exterminated in Wellington Province by 1910, all possibly by the aid of rifles, and through the old Maori periods of protection being cast aside by the pakeha-minded Maoris of the day.—Yours, etc., WIREMU TEIRA. May 11, 1943.
