OBITUARY

MR J. S. SOUTER Mr James Spiers Souter. whose death occurred recently in Christchurch, was born in Glasgow in 1896, and was the son of the late Charles and Jemima Souter. Bridge of Allan, Scotland. He was educated at the Dollar Academy, Scotland, and took up engineering. On the outbreak of the Great War, Mr Souter went to France with the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders. Returning to England, he gained his commission, and after further active service in France, volunteered for the Royal Air Force. After demobilisation, Mr Souter studied farming in Scotland and in 1920 came to New Zealand, where he purchased a dairy farm at Palmerston North. In 1927 he bought a sheep farm near Cheviot. Mr Souter was well known as a successful farmer and as a breeder of light horses. He was a member of the Cheviot Agricultural and Pastoral Association. and an honorary member of the North Canterbury Pipe Band, as well as a member of the executive of the Cheviot Returned Services’ Association. Mr Souter is survived by his widow (formerly Miss Myrtle McLean, of Amberley), and three children. The funeral took place at Balcairn cemetery, where military honours were accorded by pipers of the North Canterbury Pipe Band and by Bugler King, of the Amberley Returned Services’ Association. Wreaths were sent by the Cheviot Returned Services’ Association. Cheviot Home Guard. Domett Home Guard. St. John's Ladies’ Guild. Cheviot, and from the staff of a Women's Auxiliary Army Corps depot.
