RED CROSS AIDS

Sir, —Correspondence about Red Cross aids overseas and officials’ comments, make poor reading. It is high time the Red Cross Society appreciated these facts: (1) The Army Nursing Sisters’ uniform is worn by trained nurses only, and is earned, not “wangled.” Cf. airmen’s “wings.”.(2) Invidious distinctions cannot be made in the ranks. (3) There are Red Cross uniforms, medals and chevrons galore. Use them for what they are worth. (4) The official comments suggest cheap advertisement and are unfair to those girls who work well and uncomplainingly. The Army sisters give generous treatment and praise to them. Illfeeling will be engendered if these girls are embarrassed by officials asking for concessions they are not entitled to have. This has already brought them under criticism. (5) Protection for service women is not found in exclusive clubs and hotels, but in their own deportment.—Yours, etc., N.Z.R.N. May 8, 1943.
