WESTPORT SCHOOL OF MINES

REQUEST FOR £l5O GRANT In reply to a request for an additional grant of £l5O towards the up keep of the Westport School of Mines the Mines Department notified the school council that the request was under consideration, and asked that a copy of the balance-sheet be forwarded to the department. This was agreed to at the annual meeting of the school held on Friday Mr J. C. Brown was re-elected president, and Messrs J. M. Robertson, H Lovell, A. Morley. L. Powick, S. Strachan, and K. Kelly were elected to the board.

Referring to the financing of the school Mr Lovell said that the School of Mines was an educational institution and should be financed by the Mines Department in the same way as other educational institutes were financed by the Education Department Mr Lovell added that it seemed

dignified to have to go round collecting funds fron private people to en able the institution which was engaged in a very essential service, to be main'ained.

Mr E. W. Pearson, the recently-ap pointed director, reported that classes were being gradually built up. He had been advised by the board of examiners that he was now qualified to conduct gas tests. Mr Pearson spoke of the difficulties of transport and the loss of time in moving from place to place. T t was decided to make application to the department to place a car at the disposal of the director, or provide a grant for the purchase of a suitable car.
