OBITUARY

MR A. MCLAUGHLIN An association with the Ellesmere district extending over 50 years has been broken by the death of Mr Alexander McLaughlin, a Taumutu farmer, Who was widely known and greatly respected. Born in County Antrim, Ireland, more than 80 years ago, Mr McLaughlin had been in New Zealand about 60 years. For 10 years after his arrival he gained farming experience in the Taieri district and in Southland. On moving to the Ellesmere district he was for a time in the service of Mr Henry Rothery, one of the earliest settlers,, and eventually leased Mr Rotl.ery’s farm at Taumutu. In course of time he acquired several other properties in the neighbourhood, tfwo of which are now farmed by his sons. In 1914 Mr McLaughlin revisited Great Britain. He was a willing helper in all district affairs and a particularly strong supporter of the Ellesmere Agricultural and Pastoral Association, serving for many years on the general "cbtemittee, and as a class steward.' For 'a long period-he was a member of the Sedgemere School Commitee and its chairman for some time. St. Mark’s Church at Sedgemere had a good supporter in Mr McLaughlin, whp also took a prominent part in securing a public hall for the district, serving on the Hall Committee for more than 25 years. He married a daughter of the late Mr H. Rothery and is survived by Mrs McLaughlin and by two sons, Messrs H. R. and R. J. McLaughlin, and two daughters, Misses Rosie and Jean McLaughlin. The Rev. G. L, Harold conducted the funeral service at St. Mark’s Church.
