HOCKEY

GOOD PLAY SEEN ON SATURDAY Although marred by light rain which fell all through the games, the standard of hockey on Saturday was fairly high. The ball was slippery and the players found it hard to maintain a foothold. TRINITY v, SELWYN In a game in which science and experience beat youth and vigour, Selwyn beat Trinity by 5 goals to 1. Selwyn's forward line was patchy, but there were flashes of brilliant individual play. M. Besley, on the right wing, gave a grand display, his stick work and centring being of a high standard and deserving of better treatment by the centre forward. A. Clapshaw, who unnecessarily took flyers and missed golden Opportunities. Offside play ‘was far too frequent and lost four or five chances of scoring. T. Burtt, at centre half, won the game for Selwyn by his heady tactics and his scoring ability. Three of the goals came off his stick. The Trinity players made up for lack of experience by their determination and vigour, and in spite of the score, played a rugged and tenacious game. TECHNICAL v. UNIVERSITY A The game between Technical and University A, won by Technical by 2 goals to 1, was an exhibition of missed opportunities by the University forwards and a solid defence by the veteran Technical backs, C. A. Rogers, who staged a complete comeback, and R. Hanning, the Otago representative, both of whom turned out to assist Technical. A. Moore, the Technical centre forward, showed a fine aptitude for following in, and both the Technical goals came off his stick. University had the better of the play in the open, E. Bennett, the right half, making some good openings. T. Eggieton had bad luck In his scoring shots, several being posters. ARMY v. UNIVERSITY B Army had ail the better of the game against University B and won by 5 goals to 1. The Army centre forward, E. Allen, was again in form, and scored four ot the five goals. R. Randle, N. Wales, and N. Taylor set up a solid defence of the Army goal, and the University forwards were kept at bay until near the end of the game, when Glen came through a melee and shot University's only goal. University was unlucky to lose the services of F. Moffatt, who was injured early in the game, but resumed play at half-time.
