J. Smith (IJmin) 2, A. Malaquin (2Jmin) 3, C. Sciffington (2Jmin) 4, Fastest time was secured by a scratch rider, B. Evans, in 45min 3sec. backs tackled valiantly to keep the ball away from C. H. Davison. The Sydenham backs, soon to be reinforced by L. Brown, R. Brown, and W. Guy. were not as effective as usual and were upset by the bustling tactics, Hornby is still improving its combination and is now fast and clean near the scrum Except for hocking, forward play was even with W. Noonan and W Russell leading Sydenham, and L. Davis and A. Standeven playing best for Hornby D. Davis kicked the penalty goal. Referee: Mr G Williams. ADDINGTON-CENTRAL V. LINWOODWOOLSTON There was little between AddingtonCentral and Linwood-Woolston when they met at Linwood Park, the former winning by three tries to two, none being converted, Though Linwood had a bigger share of the attack in the first half it was not finishing off very well and the interval found the scores even, one try each. Addington's forwards went better in the second half and they led a number of spirited rallies, their main opposition coming from the Linwood threequarters. Whitley, Cook, . and Nuttall. Clough, Millar, and Smith were the best of Linwood’s forwards, and Price and Wilshire for Addington, In the first half Linwood was awarded a try for obst'rudtion and Bench scored for Addington. Whitley scored for Linwood in the second half and Price and Carter for Addington Referee; Mr A. Mathie. Under 18 Grade.—Sydenham 15, Linwood 3. Schoolboys—Linwood 14, Hornby ASSOCIATION SURPRISES IN SATURDAY’S GAMES There were two surprises in the Canterbury Football Association’s senior championship competition on Saturday The first was the defeat of the strong Technical eleven by Rangers by 3 goals to 2. The other was the defeat of AitForce A by the young Shamrock side In the other games Thistle beat Air Force B by 2 goals to 1, and Western won by default from Canterbury Regiment, which for the present has withdrawn from the competition. Championship points at present are:— Shamrock 4, Western 4, Thistle 4, Rangers 2. Air Force A 1, Technical 1, Air Force B 0, Canterbury Regiment 0. Saturday’s results were;— Shamrock 4 beat Air Force A 3; Rangers 3 beat Technical 2; Thistle 2 beat Air Force B 1; Western beat Canterbury Regiment by default. SHAMROCK v. AIR FORCE A In spite of bad weather, both teams played interesting if not faultless football, The goalkeepers had the worst to contend with, as the goalmouth was churned up and made treacherous footing Harker (Shamrock) was the more reliable. Air Force worked well in the first half and only poor finish kept it on even terms with Shamrock. A rearrangement of the line did not improve the position. The inside men might have been more effective playing behind the other three, instead of crowding the centre. The success of the flank-to-flank attack used by Shamrock might well be adopted by Air Force. The Air Force halves worked hard but tired towards the end of the second half. Shamrock played dashingly, particularly in the second half, when a rearrangement proved very successful Brilliant work by the halves, coupled with the help of Jesson at full-back, paved the way for the win. With Fielding in at centre, the attack had more sting, and the wing men. with nice backing play by the inside men, employed the flank attack very. creditably. The outstanding player of a useful line was R. Hilton Goals were scored for Shamrock by P Fox (2), R Hilton and J. Fielding. B. Stone (2) and J. Potter goaled for Air Force A. Referee; Mr N. Bilicliff. RANGERS v. TECHNICAL OLD BOYS

Both Rangers and Technical played fast, even football, with the former shading its opponent by superior finish. The combination of both teSins was not brilliant. Technical’s in spite of a fairly strong side being strangely at variance. The pace, however, was on throughout with Rangers' veteran halves giving grand support to the forward line. C, Sharr, till he went off, was well in the picture in originating van movements, and with Cahill and Furlong in support, made the most of his side's scoring, opportunities. Technical went well up to a point, but near Rangers goal-mouth its work was unimpressive The halves gave an average display, their transfers to the forwards, apart from Smith's, being often haphazardly directed Goals were scored for Hangers by R. Furlong (2) and C. Sharr. P, O’Malley and E. Phillips scored for Technical. Referee: Mr M Cassin. THISTLE v. AIR FORCE B

In a very close game, Thistle beat Air Force B by the odd goal in three Both teams were evenly matched, and it was only Thistle's ability to press home forward sallies that won it the match Nevertheless, the Air Force halves and backs, with Taylor, Richards and Adams to the fore, performed well, and for long periods pinned Thistle to its own half, where the home forwards did everything but score. Thistle had an Impressive forward line and a set of halves and backs of average, though promising, qualifications. The forwards buckled up against a lively Air Force defence too often, however, and against some of the stronger sides will have to do more with their scoring opportunities. Their shoot ing leaves much room for improvement Goals were scored for Thistle by J. O’Rawe and G, McMenamin. F. Adams netted for Air Force B. Referee: Mr C. Sweeney Reserve Senior.—Rangers 3 beat A.T.C 2; Shamrock 5, beat A.S.C. 1; Lincoln College beat Army by default. Sixth Grade.—Shamrock 4 beat Thistle 2; Technical 11. beat Nomads 0.

Seventh Grade A—Thistle 7, beat Shamrock 5; Nomads 6, beat Technical B 0: Technical A 13 beat Rangers 2. Seventh Grade B.—Shamrock A 6 beat Swifts 2; Nomads beat Thistle by default.
