SPORTING

ASHBURTON R.C.

PROGRAMME for to-day The Ashburton County Racing Club's autumn meeting to-day promises to be successful in every way. The fields are a'l reasonably well filled, and should be conducive to some keen racing. The principal event, the Ashburton Handicap, closed with five acceptors only, several defections being caused in this and other fields through many entrants feeling the effects of racing on hard ground at Easter. The strength of the field is Indicated b/ Eulogist and Military Maid being on top of the handicap. Although the former dead-heated in the Dunedin Cup on Boxing Day. and Military Maid won the Waikoualti Cup on New Year's Day, neither has raced well since. Eulogist led for more than a mile in the Great Autumn Handicap and a reproduction of that effort wufd- give him a good chance, but he jufc to be taken on trust nowadays. Military Maid made a bold showing in the Soclcburn Handicap for the major part of thei journey, but faded out nearing home, i Dominate has been very disapand if he Is ever to win a race for his Melbourne owner, this is Ills opportunity. Kevin Is another whoso form has been very misleading. He does not seem to run two races alike. He ran a solid race in the Great Autumn Handicap, and that form alone points to his. prospects in to-day’s small field, but . he may not act up to it. King Gustavo Is; also in the Flying Handicap, He won » mile race by six lengths at Riverton in heavy going, and will nr rfmibt be considered a light-weight possibility. Mauretania has 9-0 in the Fivinp Handicap against the 7-23 she carried to victory over six furlongs at Riccarton, and the extra weight and distance will probably be beyond her. Of the remainder, Straight Bat would be a good proposition if she ran up to her track form. Dinah Dhu also reads well, but the hard ground may' be against her. Rawhaimi has been racing fairly well, but has been storming in most of his six furlong races. Sham Boy was finishing on over sly furlongs at Riccarton, but 100 much reliance cannot be placed on him, On C.aU may surn’-ise, While if E'’npn is rp.sprved l>» is pertain to hj» nrnmin-nf for a »ood ’"ay Although there will he only ppv-m hnrses in the Hurdles, them material for a snectaeular race, and the three hack flat races all promise to provide ginse contests.
