INDUSTRIAL MANPOWER

APPEALS DECIDED

An appeal lodged by Lcsler Tasman Rountree against the decision of the Manpower Officer in refusing to allow him and Reginald Ernest Trist to terminate their employment with N. Caldwell, was heard before the Industrial Manpower Committee yesterday.

It was stated that Rountree was employed by Caldwell and had applied for the release of Trist from the Army on the grounds that he (Rountree) was to undertake a defence contract. He was not quite ready to start the job and Trist had gone to work for Caldwell for 10 days.

In allowing the appeal by Rountree, the committee said it was of the opinion that as the appellant had been allocated a defence contract he should be permitted to carry it out, and his appeal would therefore be allowed. The committee wished, however, to record its grave disapproval of the appellant's conduct in leaving his prior employment in breach of the regulations, and to say that in its opinion the circumstances were not such as to justify the appellant in leaving his employment before the hearing of his appeal. The appellant wishes to employ Reginald Ernest Trist. said the chairman, upon a defence contract which was allocated to himself and three other master builders. It was now admitted that one of the group, a Mr Lyes, was not working on the job. but was doing other work. The committee was of the opinion that the man to whom the contract was allocated should be doing the work and that in that case the appellant would have no need for Trist's services. The appeal was dismissed.

An appeal by Lorna Hussey, who did not appear, against the decision of the Manpower Officer refusing her permission to terminate her employment with the North Canterbury Hospital Board, was dismissed.

The appeal of Mrs M. E. Amos against her direction to J. Gadsden and Company, Ltd., was dismissed when the appellant did not appear. Bertha Lavinia Guy's appeal against refusal of permission to terminate her employment with L. F. Derbyshire was adjourned for one month. The appeal ot John Godfrey Shepherd against the decision of the Manpower Officer in refusing him permission to terminate his employment witli Alloy Steel (N.Z.). Ltd., was adjourned sine die. The appeal of George Robert Bailey against the Manpower Officer's refusal to allow him to terminate his employment with Atkinson and Son, Ltd., was allowed on medical grounds.

As it was reported that a satisfactory arrangement had been reached, the appeal of Mrs E. M. Jones against the decision refusing her permission to leave the employ of the North Canterbury Hospital’ Board was struck out.
