This was his third appearance in public. Rider Suspended After winning the ‘Awarua Handicap on Amorlad at Invercargill W. Mr J. A. Two of the finest-looking two-vear-olds of the year fought out the finish of the first division of the Nursery Handicap, at the Avondale meeting, says an Auckland correspondent, Balfron winning bv a head from Expanse. Balfron made the better beginning and led practically all the way, but was hard pressed to hold off the strong challenge of Expanse in the last furlong, Balfron is a bay by Bulandshar from Legality, dam of the smart sprinters Bambury and Whirling, and should be a good three-year-old. He met with an injury after winning at his first start, and was out of action for several months. Actually he has had only four starts, and might have been right in the top-rankers of the season only for the earlv set-back he received. Defaulter’s haU-brolher, Expanse, is also by Bulandshar, and is developing into a splendid racehorse. He was conceding six pounds to Balfron, and in another few strides he might have won. Expanse has not been over-raced, haying had only eight starts this season, and may train on Unto one of the best three-year-olds of the new season. At Ellerslle

TROTTING NOTES

An Open Race The Beach Handicap, to be run at Forbury Park on Saturday, presents a problem for backers, and it should be the b--t betting race of the day. There is possibly not a r'eally good horse engaged, judging on assessments: but a good number of those in the race have shown good form in the class they have raced in. All are race winners and the limit horses, Cheval d’Or, Cold Steel, In too Mood, and Sir Gaillard, are improvers and give promise of reaching much bet*or class company. In the Mood ran a fine race in the Futurity Stakes, and she faded out only a quarter of a mile from home. The race would probably do her a lot of good, and she may be a favourite at Forbury Park. Dianus has been well fancied several times, but has let her supporters down more than once. Her North Island racing may have Improved her, l n ? 12 , yards she is nicely placed. Safety Pin is another good pacer on I? yards; but Sports Guide will have a big job in front of him to win from the 2U yards mark. The five furlongs track it Forbury Park is not well suited to bacxmarkers in big fields, and Sports Guide may need some luck in the running t>> win. The early favourites are In the Mood, Cold Steel, and Dlanus. Consistent

Because of his consistency In finishing In a place, I'm Sure is assured of support at Forbury Park on Saturday. He fln'shed second at Invercargill last Saturday. During the present season I’m Sure has started 10 times for one win two seconds, and four thirds.
