PRAMS ON TRAMS

Sir, —The prams on trams controversy having opened again, I wondered if some of your disgruntled correspondents were aware that in the Riccarton and Fendalton districts creches have been opened to relieve mothers of the necessity of taking their children into town at all. These creches are under the supervision of a fullytrained Karitane nurse, assisted by four trained Plunket aids, and yet, for the want of patronage, it is quite possible that they may be closed down. This state of affairs makes me wonder if mothers want help with their children, or if they prefer to grouse and pity themselves, as each creche is situated right on a tfam stop, Riccarton at Puriri street, and Fendalton at the Clyde road terminus, I, for one, will be very sorry to see this experiment a failure. Yours, etc, MOTHER.

May 3, 1943. [This letter was referred to Mrs Malcolm Gray, liaison officer between the central committee of the Plunket Society and the creche committee, who said that at a meeting of the committee of the Fendalton creche, it had been decided to close down, since the creche was not sufficiently patronised. The Riccarton creche, however, was doing well and a new creche had recently been opened in the ShirleyRichmond district.] f u AR” may, if desired, briefly reply' otherwise this correspondence is closed.—Ed., “The Press. ]
