PROBLEMS OF MANPOWEI

PRODUCTION COUNCILS TO MEET CONFERENCE AT ASHBURTON Members of the North Canterbury District Council of Primary Production which met in Christchurch yesterday appointed the chairman (Mr R. T. McMillan) and the deputy-chairman (Mr W. O. Rennie) as delegates to a conference on manpower which will probably be called at Ashburton by the MidCanterbury Council. The suggestion of the latter body was that representatives of the three councils in Canterbury should meet at a date to be fixed and go fully into this question. The Mid-Canterbury Council stated that it was very much concerned over married men with families being sent overseas, while Grade 1 men were being retained in the interests of production, and it was felt that these men should be replaced by men of Grades 2 and 3. There was also the question of the delay in securing tractor drivers and teamsters to be considered, in spite of repealed promises that men would be available for that work. The chairman remarked that he was not sure whether a conference was justified at the present juncture. Mr W. H. Nicholson; I think it would be wise to wait until the full intentions of the Government are known.

The Council decided, however, to appoint two delegates in the event of the comerence being called.
