HEAVY SEAS AT KAIKOURA

DAMAGE TO WHARVES AND PROPERTY

Wharves at Kaikoura wore damaged and considerable quantities of shingle and seaweed were washed up over roads and property backing on the sea on Monday night and Tuesday as the result of the heaviest seas within the memory of some of the older residents of the town. A fisherman said that there was practically an unbroken line of breakers from St. Kilda rock to the reef at "The Point." and the waves before they broke sometimes reached a height of from 15 to 20 feet. Fortunately. he said, there was no wind. At the old wharf, which received a severe buffeting, large pieces of the decking were broken off. while round the fishermen’s lockers and the new freezer, as well as over the road and on to private property, considerable quantities of shingle and large pieces of rock and concrete from the foundation of an old building wore thrown up by the sea. The new wharf also felt the impact, but less damage was done there.

Quantities of shingle and seaweed were washed up along the Esplanade while the sea came over the road near the Garden of Memories and the school and along the whole of the stretch from the freezer to Armour’s Reach, where an old launch was thrown up eight to 10 feet from its resting place.
