The Prime Minister (the Rt. Hon. P. Fraser) will visit Christchurch on May 11 to attend the diamond jubilee celebrations of the New Zealand Educational Institute.

Mr V. C, Lawn, chief postmaster, has left for Lower Hutt to attend the funeral of his mother, who died this week.

Mr C. Trevor Pugh, B.E. (electricalcivil), formerly of Christchurch, has been admitted as an associate member of the Institution ,of Electrical Engineers, London.

According to advice received by Mr H. H. Dobic, manager of the Christchurch branch of the Union Steam Ship Company, Captain A. L. Owens, of the Orient Line, who is well known to many New Zealanders, has been created a Knight. Before the war, Captain Owens was in charge of one of the Orient Line’s cruise ships which called at New Zealand ports. Dr. O. H. Frankel was last evening elected to represent the Canterbury branch of the Royal Society of New Zealand on the Dominion Council, in place of Dr. R. S. Allan, who will be unable to attend the next conference. Mr H. J. Brunt, supervisor of the Post and Telegraph Department at Timaru, has retired for health reasons, after 40 years’ service with the department Before his appointment to Timaru in 1924. Mr Brunt held positions at Christchurch, Akaroa, and Wellington. The staff of the Post and Telegraph Department at Timaru recently met to bid farewell to Mr Brunt, A presentation was made to him by the Chief Postmaster (Mr C. W. Browne), who referred to his long and faithful service to the department. Mr C. J. Garland, a member of the Auckland City Council, has been appointed as its representative on (he Auckland University College Council in succession to Dr. R. G. Mcllroy, whose term expires in June, and who is on military service. The Rt, Rev. H. St. Barbe Holland, Bishop of Wellington, who recently underwent an operation, was in hospital for some time and was then ordered by his doctor to the country to convalesce. He spent the Easter period in Hawke’s Bay and has now resumed his duties. Dr. C. H. Hughes-Johnson, of Wanganui, has been appointed assistant medical .superintendent of the Glasgow Royal Infirmary. A motion congratulating Mrs J. Hargest on the safe arrival of her husband. Brigadier Hargest, in Switzerland from a prison camp in Italy, was carried at a meeting of the Southland Provincial Patriotic Council. Mr W. D. Sheldon (chairman) said that all New Zealand was thrilled by the news of the escape of Brigadier Hargest and Brigadier Miles. Mrs Hargest who is a member of the council, said that in response to cabled inquiries news had been received that Brigadier Miles and her husband were both in good health and were being well cared for.
