A RAILWAY INQUIRY

Sir,—l was amazed this evening to see about 5.30 a train coming from the north with the engine facing back to front. Does the Railway Department want a repetition of the Sockburn railway crossing tragedy. We remember the assurance given that in future engines would no longer be used this way on trains. When an engine is used back to front, neither the driver nor the fireman is looking ahead of the train. Continuance of this practice will mean more deaths, and is licensed manslaughter or murder.— Yours, etc., WAITING. April 6, 1943.

[On this matter being referred to the Railway Department, it was stated that the running of tender engines tender first is kept to a minimum. There has been no increase m such running. It is not possible wholly to eliminate tender first running.]
