Shots Fired From Rifle WOMAN SERIOUSLY WOUNDED • (P.A.) WELLINGTON, April 8. A Wellington woman and a United States marine were seriously wounded at Trentham on Wednesday evening when attempts were being made .to capture another marine who was firing a rifle from the top of a grandstand. The woman is Miss Lily Grey, aged 39, whose condition to-night was reported to be fair. The man who ran amuck was taken to hospital under guard and is under medical observation. . .. Miss Grey is infant mistress at the Seatoun School, and her home is at 17 Naughton terrace, Kilbjrnie. She is a member of the Salvation Army, and was on her way home from helping in a Salvation Army hut when she was wounded. Miss Grey was shot in the abdomen while she was boarding a train at the Trentham station. The marine was taking shots at everybody within range from the top of the largest stand on the racecourse. A guard of marines surrounded the stand and in the early stages of the shooting a marine who was removing a firearm out of reach was accidentally shot and seriously wounded. Miss Grey was about 100 yards from the stand and was hit by the man on top of it while he was shooting promiscuously. About an hour and a half after the trouble had begun the man was arrested. He was by then unconscious, as a result, it is surmised, of nervous exhaustion. It is estimated that he fired eight rounds from a .30 calibre service rifle. , , x jHe is a mcssman attached to a medical unit in the district. His unit has been on service in the Solomon Islands, but his personal history was not available to-day. A Marine Corps board of inquiry and the police are investigating the occurrence.
