AWARD OF D.F.M.
NEW ZEALAND AIRMAN (P.A.) WELLINGTON, April 8. Tributes to his skill as a navigator and bomb aimer are paid in the citation accompanying the award of the Distinguished Flying Medal to Sergeant lan Armstrong Blaikie, R.N.Z.A.F. Before the war Sergeant Blaikie lived at .Napier. His father, Mr J. Blaikie, lives at Greenmeadows, Napier. During the last six months Sergeant Blaikie has been engaged in operational flying and in all aerial assignments has displayed coolness and courage, states the citation. It was in a large measure due to his skilful navigation and bomb aiming that mahy successes had been achieved.
A landscape' gardener in civil life, Sergeant Blaikie was born in Christchurch in 1918 and educated at the Greendale School, Canterbury, and the Boys’ High School, Napier. Applying to join the Air Force early in 1940, he commenced his New Zealand training as an observer later in the same year.
