MOUNT PLEASANT AND CITY
MAYOR RECEIVES CHARGE OP AREA Mount Pleasant w'as formally taken into the city of Christchurch on Tuesday evening, when the Mayor (Mr E. H. Andrews) and City Councillors attended a gathering of about 60 residents In the Mount Pleasant Boat Club pavilion, held to mark the amalgamation. Mr W. L. King, chairman of the amalgamation committee, ■ thanked all who had co-operated in bringing the merger into effect. He paid a tribute to Mr A. G. Williams, chairman of the Heathcote County Council, and Mr B. Riley, the first riding member, for the work they and other councillors had done in opening up the area. Mr King expressed regret that Cr. M. E. Lyons was unable to be present, because residents owed much to his assistance. Mount Pleasant wpuld be a still more beautiful residential area and an asset to the city, Mr King concluded. After accepting charge of Mount Pleasant in the name of the City Council, Mr Andrews spoke of the benefits which would accrue to residents as a result of the merger. A more efficient but cheaper electrical supply, fuller fire protection, road works, development of reserves, and later an extended water supply, were among the improved amenities which Mr Andrews promised. He emphasised that the council had at its disposal modern plant and organisation _ to handle big projects swiftly. Immediate advantages would be apparent, but the greatest progress would be noticed immediately after the war, when, by general admission, Mount Pleasant would expand very rapidly. Other speakers discussed improvements to the foreshore. There was general approbation when Mr Andrews said that adjustments to the city by-laws would be necessary to m6et hillside conditions.
