LIQUOR SOLD WITHOUT LICENCE
MONTH’S IMPRISONMENT
(P.A.) AUCKLAND, April 5. Sentence of one month’s imprisonment with hard labour was imposed by Mr J. H. Luxford, S.M., this morning on Ranga J. Heka, a returned soldier from this war, who admitted selling a .bottle of wine to a serviceman in the street for 15s. Heka was described by the police as a “dropper,” and had two other bottles of wine in his possession when caught. Heka had been working as a wharf labourer, and earning an average of £9 a week. A married woman, Mary Ross, aged 43, who also admitted _ selling liquor without a licence, received a similar sentence. According to the police, evidence was obtained of a sale of a bottle of wine by Ross to a serviceman, and when a raid was made on her home in the city about 30 servicemen were found on the premises. Concealed in th house were 60 bottles of wine, only six of which were labelled. There were also 50 bottles of beer and part of a bottle o' brandy. Drinking was in progress. ________________
